Significantly increase the adoption of the carpooling program to reduce traffic congestion, commuting costs, and emissions, by transforming an ineffective website into a convenient mobile application.
Olivia Business Center (OBC) in Gdańsk, the largest office park in Northern Poland and home to over 15,000 employees, was struggling with a growing problem of traffic congestion during peak hours, which led to longer and more expensive commutes. The existing carpooling initiative, based on a simple website, was ineffective, attracting only 200 new users annually. The client's business goal was to radically scale up the adoption of carpooling within the OBC community, achieving maximum reach within an 8-month time frame (project conducted from January to December 2018), to make commuting more convenient and eco-friendly.
We determined that the key to success was transitioning to a mobile application, which corresponds to modern user habits of planning journeys "on the go" using smartphones. Using the Agile methodology, we worked in short sprints from January to December 2018, allowing us to respond flexibly to challenges and continuously test functionalities. By using the React Native framework, we simultaneously built two native applications (iOS and Android) in Polish and English versions, maximizing reach among the international OBC community. Key features included geolocation for smart matching of drivers and riders, a chat function for direct communication, and a leaderboard to introduce an element of gamification. Before the official launch, we also deployed a teaser website to build awareness and interest among potential users.
The introduction of the Olivia Carpooling application resulted in an immediate and significant surge in active users:
